This piglet was within a few minutes of birth, on the floor within the farrowing area. The red blotches on the piglet are remnants of fetal membranes that will dry and fall off within about 20 minutes. Within 3-4 days of birth, males will be castrated and all piglets will be given shots possibly including antibiotics and iron to protect against anemia. Some producers also clip the needle teeth and dock tails.
