A plywood box (100 cm high, 42 cm wide, 27 cm deep) containing eight hinged galvanized steel shelves (38 cm X 22.5 cm X 4 mm thick) supported by solenoid-operated catches is mounted over the feed bunk of a metabolism cage to allow a sheep to be fed at three hour intervals. Feed placed on each shelf is delivered at preset intervals by sequential operation of the solenoids from the bottom upwards, which allows the hinged shelves to fall by gravity, delivering the feed into the feed box. The feed shelves are reset by hand from the top downwards so that new feed can be placed on each shelf. The feeder has a total capacity of about 1500 g/day long hay, 2500 g/day chopped hay, 6000 g/day silage or 10000 g/day concentrate meal or pellets. Long forages can be fed because the relatively large dimensions prevent bridging.
