The Swollen Hock Syndrome seen in this chicken and short thickened long bones are caused by dietary zinc deficiency. Deficiency also leads to poor feathering and scaling of the skin (parakeratosis). Decreased feed utilization and retarded growth would be expected and death is not uncommon.
